Rails to Gold and Silver; Lines to Montana's Mining Camps, Volume 2
Stock #: 18852
Author: Bill & Jan Taylor

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $29.95

In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railroad completed its main line through Montana. The restrictive language of its charter and the conservative nature of its management prevented the NP from building branch lines to developing gold, silver and copper mining camps such as Wallace, Cooke City, Elkhorn, Pony and Virginia City. James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway recognized the NP's omission and began building a railroad into the territory. By 1886 the NP, aided by Helena banker Samuel T. Hauser, was in an all out war to protect its mining traffic sources. "Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume II covers the Northern Pacific & Montana's construction between 1888 and 1898 which resulted in the completion of the following six railroads: the Rocky Fork & Cooke City, the Butte Short Line, the Red Bluff & Pony, the Elkhorn Extension to the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Gaylord & Ruby Valley, and the De Smet to Idaho Line (Wallace branch). Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume I previously covered the construction of the Rocky Mountain, the Helena & Jefferson County, the Helena & Red Mountain, the Helena & Northern, the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Drummond & Philipsburg and the Missoula & Bitterroot Valley railroads. Rock Island Line
Stock #: KB10843
Author: Bill Marvel

List Price: $50.00
Karen's Price: $44.95

This richly illustrated volume tells the story of a legendary railroad whose tracks spanned the Midwest, serving farms and small-town America for more than 140 years. One of the earliest railroads to build westward from Chicago, it was the first to span the Mississippi, advancing the frontier, bringing settlers into the West, and hauling their crops to market. Rock Island’s celebrated Rocket passenger trains also set a standard for speed and service, with suburban runs as familiar to Windy City commuters as the Loop. For most of its existence, the Rock battled competitors much larger and richer than itself and when it finally succumbed, the result was one of the largest business bankruptcies ever. Today, as its engines and stock travel the busy main lines operated by other carriers, the Rock Island Line lives on in the hearts of those whom it employed and served. more»

Granted, the B-2 development program has had to endure a rocky road, but it is now here, and even though in smaller numbers than many desired, it will still present a formidable presence in the 21st century. more»

The current aircraft of the USAF and U.S. Navy – the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, and F-22 – all carry a rapid-fire Gatling Gun in addition to their missile loads. more»
