Author: Justin W. Strickland

List Price: $21.99
Karen's Price: $19.95

By the beginning of the 20th century, passenger trains overwhelmed Chattanooga’s two railroad depots and a larger station was needed. The solution was Terminal Station, which rivaled most Southern depots in size, expense, and aesthetic beauty. Providing transportation to cities throughout the country, the terminal made its mark as the gateway for rail from the agricultural south to the industrial north. Following its closure, the terminal was reopened as a renowned hotel and entertainment complex in 1973, becoming one of Chattanooga’s many exciting attractions. This is the history of this depot in both stories and photographs. Soft Cover. more»

Chesapeake & Ohio Coal Tipples
Stock #: KB11288
Author: Thomas Dixon

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $24.95

This book describes the cycle of coal from the mine head, through the preparation plant, commonly called the tipple, and into the railway cars. It shows how coal was handled within the tipple so as to separate it by size and composition and how it was placed in hopper cars on the C&O for transportation to market. As far as we know, this is the first simple explanation of the coal preparation process and how it interfaced with the railway. It includes detailed descriptions of the tipple and its machinery, of the grades and types of coal, and the various styles of tipples. Material includes photographs and drawings of tipples from large to small, processing from four or five car loads a month to 3,000 cars per month. The modeler will find photographs of tipple buildings of all descriptions, from wooden frame to corrugated steel siding. This book should be of great benefit to modelers interested in C&O operations, and to those interested in coal country and the whole process of coal mining and sale. Most photographs come from the early to mid-1950s, an era popular to many modelers. Soft cover.

List Price: $24.95
Karen's Price: $21.95

This book is an overview history of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division GP-7 and GP-9 model locomotives of the C&O. These locomotives were the backbone of C&O's first diesel fleet and were the main replacements for its freight-service steam power. Many were used by the B&O and its affiliation, and some survived into the late Chessie system and early CSX eras. All were gone by the mid-1980s. They were the quintessential C&O freight diesel of the 1950s and 1960s. This book covers their history and presents a color album showing them at work across the system. Soft cover. more»

Chesapeake & Ohio General Electric Diesel Locomotives
Stock #: KB11229
Author: Karen Parker

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $24.95

This is a complete history of GE locomotives on C&O starting with the famous U-25B model in 1963. This was GE's first entry into the locomotive field since its early experimental units in the 1930s. The model helped bring C&O into the higher horsepower "Second Generation" era. C&O had 38 of the U25Bs and though they did not break EMD's hold on the C&O motive power fleet, they began the build-up of GE units that would occur in the 1970s and 1980s. The C&O's GE "U-Boat" units are covered in detail both during their operation on C&O/B&O and in the Chessie System Era. The models included the U30B, U30C, U23B, and B30-7 models that became a commonplace sight on C&O/Chessie System trains. Complete roster and mechanical data. Included are scores of color photos in B&O, C&O and Chessie paint schemes. Soft cover.

Chesapeake & Ohio K-4 Class 2-8-4 Steam Locomotives
Stock #: KB10803
Author: Thomas W. Dixon Jr.

List Price: $24.95
Karen's Price: $21.95

The First in the History Series Books! This is the 1st book and covers the C&O K04 Kanawha. During World War II, the C&O turned to the 2-8-4 wheel arrangement to handle the fast freight schedule demanded by the war-time needs. The C & O had watched the development of the 2-8-4 on the Nickel Plate Road and the Pere Marquette through the "Advisory Mechanical Committee" which was common to the four railroads controlled by the Van Sweringens. It based its 2-8-4 design on the NKP and Pere Marquette "Berkshires". However it chose to name them "Kanawhas" after the Kanawha River, which paralleled its main line. Between 1943 and 1947, the C & O purchased ninety, Class K-4, 2-8-4 "Kanawhas", twenty from the Lima Locomotive Works and seventy from the American Locomotive Company. These locomotives were numbered 2700 through 2789. All of these locomotives had 69" diameter drivers, 26" x 34" cylinders, a 245 psi boiler pressure, they exerted 69,350 pounds of tractive effort and each weighed about 292,500 pounds. Chesapeake & Ohio Maintenance of Way Motor Cars
Stock #: KB11116
Author: Charles W. Ford

SOLD OUT

This book tells the story of the C&O’s fleet of maintenance-of-way motor cars that were used to transport men and material for track repair in the decades from the 1920s to the 1970s. They were preceded by non-powered lever cars (“handcars” in popular parlance), and in the late 1970s were superseded by highway trucks that were fitted with railroad guide wheels, called “Hi-railers.” However, during the forty years or so they were the primary conveyance for C&O employees working on the track and were seen everywhere along the system. Author Charles Ford tells the story not just of their use on C&O, but gives background on the motor car in generic terms. C&O called them motor cars, but many other railroads called them Speeders. They were the backbone of the MoW work for the middle years of the 20th century. Soft cover. Charli

Chesapeake & Ohio in Cincinnati, Volume 1: 1872 - 1912
Stock #: KB11117
Author: Wendell McChord

List Price: $24.95
Karen's Price: $19.95

The C&O’s mainline has always been shown as Washington-Cincinnati after 1889. Even before that, Cincinnati was the western terminal, gained first by Ohio steamboat from Huntington, W. Va., and later via other railroads through Kentucky until 1889 when its own Cincinnati Division was completed, running along the south bank of the Ohio River. At Cincinnati, C&O connected with many other railroads and opened a large through traffic. In 1910, it acquired the Chicago, Cincinnati & Louisville Railroad and thus obtained a line that ran from Cincinnati to the Chicago gateway. Subsequently, Cincinnati became a hub for C&O’s passenger traffic during its peak year through the first half of the 20th Century. Its freight business was handled by yards outside the city, but the city itself has always loomed large in the life of the C&O. This book explores the relationship of C&O and the Queen City of the West. Soft cover.
