General Electric 70 - Ton Diesel Locomotives
Stock #: KB10856
Author: Ronald D. Sims

List Price: $38.00
Karen's Price: $34.95

Never a major component of any Class I railroad roster, the General Electric 70-ton diesel “road switcher” could be found almost everywhere in American railroading, serving lines that weren’t built to accommodate larger locomotives. It was conceived as a ¾-scale model of the EMD SW1 switcher, to be sold with easy financing to shortlines and industries with line-haul operations. Given this opportunity, GE took advantage of advances in diesel engine performance and its already cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to develop a single-engine diesel locomotive with 600 horsepower that weighed thirty tons less than an Alco or Baldwin or EMD switcher rated at the same power. A truly bare-bones machine, the proposed new GE switcher could be sold at a significantly lower base price and be at home on rail too light to support a “standard” 99-ton switcher. Over 270 photos from Canada's Hudson Bay to Chili's Atacama Desert, and from Australia and the Philippines, which the majority of photos taken in the United States. Hard Cover. more»

Ghost Rails XI, Shenango Valley Steel - Sharon Steel Co.
Stock #: KB11043
Author: Wayne A Cole

SOLD OUT

Ghost Rails XI Shenango Valley Steel is perhaps the most extensive and complicated history covering roughly 200 squares miles, Sharon, New Castle, Youngstown and the Shenango River valley. Complex because of all the railroads covered (Erie, EL RR, NYC, Conrail, Sharpsville, P&LE, B&O, Valley Connecting) and their organizational and track changes, and added to the mix the Penn Ohio streetcar line. Augmenting the historic mix is a detailed and invested steelmaking research into Sharon Steel, USS New Castle Carnegie Works, Shenango Furnaces, the early Sharpsville and West Middlesex blast furnaces, and a touch of Republic Steel, Youngstown.

The center piece of steelmaking obviously is Sharon Steel detailing 100 pages of one of the most customized steel makers in America 1900 to 2000, a survivor of the 1981 American steel crash and yet in operation today as NLMK PA. The Sharon Steel section proceeds thru the entire steelmaking process with the emphasis on strip steel, open hearths, blast furnaces, the Swedish Stora Kaldo (BOF) and electric furnaces. In order to tell the entire history, the author had to go back to Sharon Steel Hoop and its early rival in the strip steel business USS Farrell Works. Hard cover.
