Wreck of the Red Arrow
Stock #: 13665
Author: Dennis P. McIlnay

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $29.95

Just after 3 am on February 18, 1947, a crack passenger train of the Pennsylvania Railroad pierced the fog and frigid air in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. The derailment killed 24 and injured 140.

Dennis McIlnay gives the passengers a voice in "The Wreck of the Red Arrow," his nonfiction book published last year. He recounts their stories along with those of their families and the doctors and respondents to the fatal scene. The book also taps into police reports and coroner inquests and includes photos from Bennington Curve, the twist that sent the train hurtling into the gorge that flanks both sides of the railway.

Traveling at an estimated speed of 65 mph, the train took the curve 35 mph faster than the mandated maximum speed limit. Based on the account of the only surviving engineman, Michael Billig, and the observations of locals who witnessed the train passing that night, speed was said to have caused the locomotive derailment.

With nine cars completely over the bank and another four turned across surrounding tracks, passengers sustained a variety of injuries, from lost fingernails to completely severed appendages. The death toll remained low, but wasn't completely reflective of the overall damage: Altoona hospitals were flooded with accident victims for days and even weeks after the crash.

McIlnay focuses on who these people were and where they were going, writing almost like a novelist. Each chapter chronicles a different angle of the accident, while allowing readers to get to know the people behind the names. Hard cover.

Rails to Gold and Silver; Lines to Montana's Mining Camps, Volume 2
Stock #: 18852
Author: Bill & Jan Taylor

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $29.95

In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railroad completed its main line through Montana. The restrictive language of its charter and the conservative nature of its management prevented the NP from building branch lines to developing gold, silver and copper mining camps such as Wallace, Cooke City, Elkhorn, Pony and Virginia City. James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway recognized the NP's omission and began building a railroad into the territory. By 1886 the NP, aided by Helena banker Samuel T. Hauser, was in an all out war to protect its mining traffic sources. "Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume II covers the Northern Pacific & Montana's construction between 1888 and 1898 which resulted in the completion of the following six railroads: the Rocky Fork & Cooke City, the Butte Short Line, the Red Bluff & Pony, the Elkhorn Extension to the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Gaylord & Ruby Valley, and the De Smet to Idaho Line (Wallace branch). Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume I previously covered the construction of the Rocky Mountain, the Helena & Jefferson County, the Helena & Red Mountain, the Helena & Northern, the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Drummond & Philipsburg and the Missoula & Bitterroot Valley railroads. Fairs and Railroads; Railroads at World's Fairs, Expositions and Railroad Fairs
Stock #: 14228
Author: Thornton Waite

List Price: $0.00
Karen's Price: $29.95

World's Fairs and expositions have been held in the United States many times int he past 140 years. The fairs served several purposes.  They were used by the cities in which they were held to promote the local economy, by national industries to show off their technical prowess, and by the public from all over the nation to have a good time and learn about their nation and the world. The railroads were once an important and essential part of these fairs, transporting the majority of the visitors to and from them, and using the fairs as a public relation opportunity to show the visitors that the railroads were using the latest technology and that they were a benefit to the country.  The first fairs in the United States focused on the modern technologies used by the railroads, but as time passed the railroads, used the fairs to both promote travel on their lines and to show off their heritage and history.

This book tells of the participation of the railroads at the larger world's fairs and railroad expositions in the United States, describing how the railroads addressed the transportation of large numbers of people to the fairs and describing the exhibits they had on the fairgrounds. Soft cover

History of the J. G. Brill Company
Stock #: 17979
Author: Debra Brill

List Price: $59.95
Karen's Price: $49.95

Slight damage on dust jacket, otherwise new condition.

From a small horsecar building firm established in 1868, the J. G. Brill Company grew to be a world leader in a rapidly evolving and growing industry that at the time of the First World War was the fifth largest in the United States. Besides its successful line of trolleys and other electric cars, Brill built horsecars, cable cars, narrow-gauge and gas-propelled cars for railroads, and even buses and trolley buses. The Brill policy was to build whatever the customer wanted. With no job considered too small or too peculiar, some delightfully wacky cars were produced, and Brill employees gained valuable experience in all the varied aspects of car building.

As the transportation industry’s motive power evolved from horse to cable to electricity to gasoline, the Brill Company kept in step, gradually expanding its business, buying out trolley car builders in five states, and even establishing a plant in France. As it grew, the company maintained its reputation for quality to such an extent that when J. G. Brill went out of business in 1944, its successor took the name for itself, becoming the ACF Brill Motors Corporation. Through a better understanding of Brill Company management and exposure to previously unpublished office documents concerning the later years of the company, the reader will gain new insights into the Brill/ERPCC/Brilliner situation. Hard copy.

Vancouver Island's Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway, Volume 2
Stock #: KB10884

SOLD OUT

NEW, but dust cover slightly roughed up around the corners.

The CPR Steam Years, 1905 1949, this is the continued story of the ever-fascinating, often troubled E&N Railway. The E&N became the key transportation link along the eastern coast of Vancouver Island and to the west coast at Port Alberni. Freight service was tied to forestry and mining, and the E&N also carried everything from furniture to fruit for a growing population that depended on the trains. Even the circus came to Vancouver Island on the E&N Railway. The E&N faced rapid change in the post Second World War years. In the late 1940s, in a dramatic modernization, the E&N became the first railway in Canada to begin using new, more efficient diesel locomotives. In 1955, the streamlined Dayliner arrived and replaced the well-worn wooden passenger cars. In spite of increasing competition from the automobile, the train somehow survived for over 50 years, attracting people from all over the world to explore Vancouver Island on the scenic, leisurely railway. Featuring hundreds of spectacular photos and beautiful drawings, the book presents a sweeping portrait of the E&N Railway: from the first diesels to the formation of VIA Rail Canada and its operation of the Dayliner, through CP's sale of the E&N and the eventual formation of the Island Corridor Foundation. With Turner's trademark exhaustive research, MacLachlan's years of experience, and many insights from people who worked for and traveled on the railway, this is at once an invaluable reference and fascinating history. Hard cover, No Dust Jacket.

Robert Richardson's Narrow Gauge News; Colorado Rail Annual No. 21
Stock #: 13152

List Price: $44.95
Karen's Price: $39.95

From 1949 until 1958 Robert "bob" Richardson was the editor and "abandoned lines reporter" of the Narrow Gauge News. Seventy-three mimeographed and six printed issues were mailed to those who sent self-addressed, stamped "No. 10" envelopes to the "World's Largest Narrow Gauge Museum and Motel" at South Alamosa, Colorado. Circulation was limited, and today copies are almost impossible to find.
We have reprinted these as a book with over 150 photographs made from Bob's original negatives, many of which have never been published before, now preserved in the Western History Collection of the Denver Public Library. This fascinating account ofthe final years of the San Juan and Galloping Geese, snowfighting, abandonment hearings and last runs. The struggle among railroad officials, employees, railfans and then-indifferent public over the survival of the slim gauge is recounted rom Bob Richardson's unique perspective.
Bob has written an introduction describing how he chronicled the declining years of Colorado's narrow gauge empire over four decades ago. The Narrow Gauge News played an unrecognized role in building public support for the surviving narrow gauge we treasure today.  Hard cover.
