Chesapeake & Ohio K-4 Class 2-8-4 Steam Locomotives
Stock #: KB10803

List Price: $24.95
Karen's Price: $22.95

The First in the History Series Books! This is the 1st book and covers the C&O K04 Kanawha. During World War II, the C&O turned to the 2-8-4 wheel arrangement to handle the fast freight schedule demanded by the war-time needs. The C & O had watched the development of the 2-8-4 on the Nickel Plate Road and the Pere Marquette through the "Advisory Mechanical Committee" which was common to the four railroads controlled by the Van Sweringens. It based its 2-8-4 design on the NKP and Pere Marquette "Berkshires". However it chose to name them "Kanawhas" after the Kanawha River, which paralleled its main line. Between 1943 and 1947, the C & O purchased ninety, Class K-4, 2-8-4 "Kanawhas", twenty from the Lima Locomotive Works and seventy from the American Locomotive Company. These locomotives were numbered 2700 through 2789. All of these locomotives had 69" diameter drivers, 26" x 34" cylinders, a 245 psi boiler pressure, they exerted 69,350 pounds of tractive effort and each weighed about 292,500 pounds. Pacific Electric Cars, A Pictorial Journey: 1911-1953
Stock #: KB10715
Author: David Garcia and Joseph Strapac

List Price: $70.00
Karen's Price: $59.95

The Pacific Electric Railway, organized in 1901-02 by Henry Huntington and carried on after 1911 by a new corporation of the same name, owned by the Southern Pacific, was closely aligned with Southern California’s history and economic development. This book addresses the forty-two years -1911 to 1953- that the “new” Pacific Electric Railway operated electric-powered passenger and freight trains in southern California. The authors had access to extensive photo files illustrating PE cars and their operating environment and selected the most effective for use in this book, with three major goals: to illustrate all the major classes of cars and locomotives acquired by the new PE after 1911 (as well as providing representative images of “legacy” cars inherited from predecessors), to provide detailed, informative picture captions that can both stand on their own and provide the seeds for future research. FRISCO - Nothing could be Finer than a Frisco Diner
Stock #: KB10705
Author: John W. Reed

List Price: $59.95
Karen's Price: $49.95

Food service on the St. Louis–San Francisco Railroad began with a single dining car converted from a coach and grew into a fleet of 34 dining cars serving the Frisco’s nine-state territory in the mid-1940s. Immediately after World War II, brand new streamlined dining cars were added to the Frisco’s fleet. It was a time when businessmen, celebrities and families on vacation routinely took the train to their destinations, and dinner in the diner was a special treat. Frisco's dining cars developed a reputation for serving the finest food on rails. Highly complimentary letters were common. One such letter, from a New York passenger in 1949, appeared in the railroad’s newsletter, All Aboard, complimenting the Frisco on its food and service, adding, "Other lines should send scouts to get ideas from your chefs!” This book preserves the memories of the people who made the dining car experience possible, and to pass on the lure of the dining car to generations that have never known the appeal of "dinner in the diner.” Hard Cover. more»

Rails Around Lake Tahoe
Stock #: KB10625
Author: Mallory Hope Ferrell

List Price: $60.00
Karen's Price: $56.95

Lake Tahoe, nestled on the eastern flank of the High Sierra, is among California's loveliest places. In the 19th and early 20th century it was the site of extensive railroad lumbering operations, which gradually gave way to increasing tourism. The beautifully clear waters of the lake provided transportation for not only the timber, but for passengers, mail and freight aboard the many steamboats that plied its blue surface. In this magnificent setting, logging railroads and steamboats of the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company brought huge logs to lakeshore sawmills. The Lake Tahoe Narrow Gauge Railroad and its connecting Clear Creek Flume took the timbers, lumber and cordwood up and over the divide to reach the Comstock Bonanza towns. By the late 1890s, most of the virgin stands had been cut. In the early 1900s, tourists began to flock to Lake Tahoe. They rode on a new narrow gauge, the Lake Tahoe Railway & Transportation Company. Eventually the Southern Pacific took over the property and converted it to standard gauge. The SP branch was abandoned in 1941. This is the story of the many logging railroads that operated in and near the Tahoe basin, with hundreds of rare photographs, maps, plans and illustrations. The author, a distinguished historian of narrow-gauge railroading and the West, has with this book added further luster to a long record of fine publications. Hard cover. more»

Canadian Pacific's Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway
Stock #: KB10688
Author: Robert D Turner

List Price: $49.95
Karen's Price: $44.95

The Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway had a special character and charm like few others. Skirting the eastern coastline of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, it was separated from the rest of the national and continental rail network by the Georgia and Juan de Fuca Straits. During the days of steam power on the railway, it was a distant and often rustic outpost of the Canadian Pacific Railway’s vast system, but it was a profitable one. It hauled logs and coal, fish and paper, strawberries and raspberries, beer and wine, automobiles and oil, and tons and tons of wood. The E&N carried soldiers off to two world wars, toured royalty on Vancouver Island and carried hundreds of passengers in stately parlour cars or rickety day coaches. The mail was sorted on the trains and could be delivered “Up Island” in a matter of hours. The E&N’s well-maintained steam locomotives were the pride of the railway. Carefully researched, and beautifully illustrated, this book captures the E&N in its many moods. Hundreds of never-before-published rare photos, including some exceptional colour images from the 1940s, and an extensive and insightful text document the railway, the people who worked on it and all those whose lives it shaped. With references to the old (including the history of the U Drop Inn Café in Texas) and new (including a section about the recent Cars movie), The Route 66 Encyclopedia provides a sweeping look at a highway that has become more than just a road. These pages cover the history of Route 66 and the people who played a role in its transformation from highway to icon between 1926 and the present, but like the highway itself, this work does not fit within the traditional confines of generalities or terminology. Yes, this is an encyclopedia, a reference book for all things Route 66. Stock #: KB10667
Author: Joe Dale Morris with George C. Werner

List Price: $90.00
Karen's Price: $79.95

The States of Texas and Louisiana and the Southern Pacific Railroad grew up together. In 1853 the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos & Colorado, the first railroad in Texas was opened; and in the same year the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western, the first component railroad of the T&NO in Louisiana was opened. Soon, thirty-four other railroads were built in Texas, forming nine predecessor roads, and nine railroads were built in Louisiana, forming five predecessor railroads. In 1927 the Espee leased all of the predecessor roads to the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and finally in 1934 all of the leased companies were merged into a single company. In including a historical review of the companies, with over 900 black & white and 80 color photos, taken by 50 of the nation’s finest hotographers, 15 illustrations, 12 maps in full color, a bibliography and index the full story of the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, the Southern Pacific Lines in Texas and Louisiana, is presented. Union Pacific Big EMD's - DD35 and DDA40X, Soft cover
Stock #: KB10664
Author: Diesel Era

List Price: $39.95
Karen's Price: $36.95

After testing EMD’s GP35-DD35-DD35-GP35 demonstrator set, Union Pacific was so pleased with the design that it almost immediately ordered an additional 25 DD35s and 22 matching GP35s, which were delivered between May and August 1964. These joined the four-unit demonstrator set previously acquired by the carrier. The Centennials were the final example of Union Pacific’s search for the ideal locomotive. While the road pursued a study of its motive power needs in late 1967 and early 1968, UP in March 1968 tried, as a stopgap measure, using EMD’s SD45 model as a high-horsepower, high-speed locomotive, but with limited success. UP returned to the concept of double-engine locomotives and in collaboration between the railroad and EMD, the DDA40X came to life. Within 13 months of an initial March 1968 communication, the railroad and the builder had worked out a definitive design, and the first unit was delivered. The timing of the first unit coincided with the 100th anniversary of the May 10, 1869, ceremony marking the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah – the DDA40X quickly became known as the Centennial. It was numbered 6900, and 46 more examples arrived over the next 28 months. 130 B/W and 170 color photos plus diagrams. Soft cover. more»

Union Pacific in the Los Angeles Basin
Stock #: KB10626
Author: Jeff S. Asay

List Price: $80.00
Karen's Price: $69.95

Southern California was only one corner of the Union Pacific system, but the story of the railroad in that area is fascinating and surprisingly complex. It began in the 1880s with the predecessors of the Los Angeles Terminal Railway, extended through the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, begun under the ownership of Senator W.A. Clark and then jointly owned with Union Pacific under E.H. Harriman, continued under the name Los Angeles & Salt Lake, until eventual absorption into Union Pacific system. The story extends through the 20th century to the Southern Pacific merger of 1996, with some details, such as the Alameda Corridor, down to the present day. Part of this fascinating story is the relationships with the other three major railroads in the Los Angeles area, Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Pacific Electric. Those relations varied between cooperation and vigorous hostility, with each of the railroads taking turns at the opposite extreme from the others at different times. An important part of the story is Union Pacific’s tenancy of Terminal Island, initially to serve the traffic of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and later to benefit from the vast Wilmington Oil Field, something unimagined when the Los Angeles Terminal Railway was acquiring title to the property in 1890. The book is lavishly illustrated. About 560 photographs, most previously unpublished, enrich this book, in addition to 100 graphics of different kinds, many in color, and 60 maps. Hard cover. more»

Even more remarkable is the fact that all the Geese are alive and well, and three of the seven have migrated to the Colorado Railroad Museum. Soft cover. more»

Author: Lloyd D Lewis

List Price: $29.95
Karen's Price: $27.95

This fourth volume in the West Virginia Railroads series tells the story of the Virginian Railway within the state. Built late in the railway era, it was intended for the almost excusive haulage of coal from West Virginia mines to Norfolk, Virginia. The Virginian operated a 136 mile electrified mainline, much of it through its West Virginia territory, which improved operations over steam power. Because of its lack of passenger and general freight, and concentration on coal, it had a reputation as an unmatched money-maker. Organized in 1907, it was absorbed by Norfolk & Western in 1959. The line achieved national fame when "Ripley's Believe It or Not" cited it as being the shortest interstate railroad in the U.S. The N-K, which at various times used electric, steam and diesel power, operated until the end of cement production at the Superior plant in 1986. A pioneer in train photography, Steinheimer lived through and documented the railroad's heyday and its decline. He is one of very few photographers who appreciate the aesthetics of all locomotives, from steam engines to the latest diesel-powered behemoths. He has a particular fondness for the landscape of the American West, and many of his images situate trains in the larger geography and culture of the time. Known for taking pictures at night, in bad weather, and from risky perches on top of moving train platforms, Steinheimer has an enormous creativity and productivity. Hard cover. more»

Two Thumps Up! A stunning collection that brings an earlier era to life. Although steam engines were seldom used for everyday train transportation by 1960, they live on in the minds of those fortunate enough to have experienced them and in the many museums and steam-powered excursions throughout the country. They are especially active in the West, where master photographer Joel Jensen has, for more than twenty-five years, documented these well-restored and maintained veterans in their natural settings doing what they used to-hauling both passengers and freight and delighting rail fans of all ages. This timeless collection takes us back to the end of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, with captivating images evoking the past. Essays by John Gruber, the president of the Center for Railroad Photography, and Scott Lothes, the project director for the center, help to put these wonderful photographs in context.
